The Chicago Spire is a $2.4 billion skyscraper under construction that is designed to reduce the high wind speed often found at the base of skyscrapers by using an innovative spiral shape to “scoop” and channel air upwards away from the street.

Richie Sowa has started to build another floating island after his first construction (shown below) was destroyed by a hurricane.

The old island, built from over 250,000 plastic bottles, had a house with a toilet as well as a solar-powered oven. You can get more information at ecoble.

Duct tape has been used many times in space. In the photograph above it is being used to extend the sprayguards of the Apollo 17 lunar rover to prevent “rooster tails“.

It has also been used to:

• Fix a safety-jet backpack
• Improvise a makeshift hacksaw
• Create a improvised CO₂ filter after an accident on the Apollo 13 mission
• Build an on-board dinner table
