US Obesity

Whilst there is some disagreement over whether it is correct to call obesity a disease, the animation from CNN below shows that it certainly shows some signs of spreading like one.

  1. This is based on the human body mass index which last year in your “Bad Science” presentation you said was wrong. Does that make this inaccurate?

  2. BMI is still a fairly good indicator for US Americans because the BMI measure was originally based on a person of that body type – it’s when BMI is used for other ethnicities such as Orientals who are “traditionally” small and light or Hispanics who are often shorter and heavier, that problems arise.

  3. isnt bmi also innaccurate for sportspeople who may have a lot of muscle and so have a high bmi, so altho this is good for generalising groups of people, for certain individuals it is not recommended????
