Nobel Prize in Physics
The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Albert Fert (France) and Peter Grberg (Germany) for their discovery of giant magnetoresistance (GMR).
GMR has enabled the construction of smaller higher-capacity hard disk drives and more energy-efficient RAM.

Nobel Prize in Medicine
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (to give it its full title) has been awarded to Mario Cappecchi (USA), Sir Martin Evans (UK) and Olvier Smithies (USA).
The prize was split evenly between the three for their work on so-called “knock-out mice“, which are used to study genetic diseases.
Sinkholes
A sinkhole occurs when the ground collapses into the space left by the removal of underlying bedrock by an underground stream or river.
The 100-metre wide sinkhole in these photographs appeared in a busy Guatemala neighbourhood, swallowing ten houses in the process.
Can you lift a car with a firehose?
