The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Albert Fert (France) and Peter Grberg (Germany) for their discovery of giant magnetoresistance (GMR).

GMR has enabled the construction of smaller higher-capacity hard disk drives and more energy-efficient RAM.
